What Is Palatal Expansion?

The upper jaw is made up of two bones separated by a midline suture. In children and teens, that suture is still open and responsive. In adults, it has fused. In all cases, the goal of expansion is the same: to gently widen the upper arch, creating more space in the mouth and nasal cavity, supporting healthy development, reducing crowding, and improving airway function.

The right approach depends on your age and anatomy. For younger patients, a traditional expander or Invisalign aligners can achieve outstanding results with ease. For teens, the same options apply, with added urgency as the fusion window begins to close.

For adults, our MARPE appliance makes true skeletal expansion possible without surgery.Expansion typically takes 6 to 12 months in total, including both the active expansion phase and the stabilization period that follows.

Expansion at Every Age

For Children

The window for palatal expansion is widest in childhood, when the jaw bones are still growing and the midline suture is fully open. Early treatment gives us the greatest ability to guide development, improve breathing, reduce future crowding, and often simplify or eliminate further orthodontic treatment later on. We offer both traditional fixed expanders and Invisalign expansion for children who qualify.

For Teens

As teens move through adolescence, the midline suture begins to fuse. This makes the teen years a critical and time-limited window for expansion. Acting now, while the jaw is still responsive, allows us to make meaningful changes through a straightforward process. Traditional expanders and Invisalign expansion are both available for teens, and Dr. Gorton will recommend the best fit based on your anatomy and lifestyle.

For Adults

In adults, the palate bones have fused, which once made expansion possible only through surgery. Today, MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) changes that entirely. Using four small temporary anchors placed in the palate, MARPE applies precise force directly to the bone, achieving real skeletal expansion without surgical intervention. For adults with mild to moderate arch concerns, Invisalign expansion may also be a strong option.

Traditional Expanders

A fixed appliance bonded to the back teeth that gently widens the palate over time. Turned once daily for approximately six weeks, then left in place for around six months while bone stabilizes. An excellent choice for children and teens who benefit from consistent, around-the-clock expansion with zero management required.

Invisalign Expansion

For patients who qualify, Invisalign clear aligners can achieve meaningful palatal expansion. Nearly invisible, removable, and smooth edges. Worn approximately 23 hours per day, changed weekly, and monitorable remotely through an app. Available for children, teens, and adults with mild to moderate arch concerns.

MARPE

The gold standard for adult palatal expansion. Four small miniscrews are placed in the palate under local anesthesia, allowing an expander to apply force directly to the bone rather than the teeth. True skeletal expansion in adults, achieved without surgery. Miniscrews are removed at the end of treatment in a quick, comfortable in-office visit.
