A Marin County Legacy
For over 20 years, Dr. Jasmine Gorton has practiced in Marin County continuously, building relationships across generations of families, in keeping with the legacy of outstanding orthodontics set in place by Dr. Bill Schmohl. She is recognized globally as an Invisalign Top 1% Provider and also an Invisalign Case Gallery Finalist, a reflection of both the volume and complexity of cases she takes on.
Long before airway-focused orthodontics became an industry talking point, she was already lecturing on it, pioneering 3D X-ray imaging in Marin County, and treating the kinds of cases that require patience, precision, and an unwavering commitment to meet the patient’s needs.
A Working Mom Who Gets It
Dr. Gorton’s son attended K-8 in San Rafael and spent those years on a local Swim Team, Capoeira classes, Summer Camps and even Boy Scouts. She navigated sixteen years of school pickups, practice schedules, and the juggle of being a working mom with a full-time practice.
She knows what families are weighing when they choose an orthodontist, because she has been that parent.
Education
A San Francisco Bay Area native, Dr. Gorton earned dual bachelor’s degrees at UC Berkeley in Integrative Biology and Social Sciences, graduating Dean’s List while working full time and playing women’s water polo.
She went on to Harvard School of Dental Medicine, graduating cum laude, then to UCSF for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Growth and Development, followed by her Orthodontic Residency, where she earned her Master of Science in Oral Biology and Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics.
She holds Voluntary Board Certification through the American Board of Orthodontics, a distinction earned by fewer than one in three practicing orthodontists, as well as Board Certification as a Dentist through the Dental Board of California and the Northeast Regional
Board. She has served as President of the Marin County Dental Society and on the Dean’s Council at UCSF School of Dentistry.
She is a native speaker of both English and Spanish, a reflection of her Puerto Rican heritage. She speaks German, as she worked as an orthodontist in the German part of Switzerland prior to returning to the Bay Area.
Research
Dr. Gorton’s research has been published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics and has been recognized at the highest levels of the profession through citations.
Her 2022 paper in the JCO introduced a Phase I clear aligner protocol for young children, demonstrating simultaneous arch expansion and incisor correction using Invisalign. Her 2020 JCO paper documented Invisalign treatment in young children combined with vibratory technology to accelerate tooth movement.
One of the three patients in that paper was her own son, treated with Invisalign expansion before Invisalign First, the company’s dedicated product for children, even existed.
Her AJO-DO publication on preventing decay around orthodontic brackets was featured on the journal cover and selected as an original article for continuing education credit. She remains committed to avoiding the white scars of decay that can form around orthodontic brackets and to that end, all patients are provided with a stronger toothpaste during treatment and plans are ended if lack of compliance is putting the patient at risk.
Earlier research includes work on osteoclast biology presented at the International Association for Dental Research meeting in France, periodontal pathogen detection in HIV-positive subjects, and barriers to dental care access for the Latino population, presented at the Graduate School of Public Health at Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico.

Lecturing and Teaching
Dr. Gorton has lectured locally and internationally across a wide range of topics, often sharing the stage with other experts in their respective fields.
In 2019, she co-hosted a continuing education event on pediatric sleep apnea alongside Dr. Kasey Li, co-founder of the multidisciplinary treatment clinic at the Stanford Sleep Disorder Clinic and the only surgeon in the world board certified by all three relevant American boards: otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Together they presented the latest clinical and research updates on sleep disordered breathing in children to an audience of physicians and dentists across the Bay Area.
Her lecture topics span sleep disordered breathing in children, airway expansion techniques across all ages, Invisalign for young children, teens and adults, CBCT 3D imaging, accelerated orthodontics, teledentistry, TADs as an alternative to jaw surgery, and environmentally conscious dental practice. She has served as Moderator for Continuing Education through the American Association of Orthodontists and actively participates in orthodontic study clubs locally and internationally.
She mentors orthodontic residents from UCSF and UOP in her Marin County office and has served as a guest speaker in the UCSF Orthodontics Department. She has also participated in the College of Marin Dental Assistant internship program.
In 2005, Marin Ortho led Marin County to implement volumetric 3D imaging for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, nearly two decades before it became standard practice. Her patients have benefited from that comprehensive, forward-looking approach.

Outside the Office
Dr. Gorton loves being outdoors, especially with friends. She swims with a master’s team, trail runs several times a week, and dances salsa whenever she can find an outdoor venue. Marin is her home and she is grateful to be able to live in a county with so much protected open space.
