Tongue Trainers

A tongue thrust occurs when the tongue habitually pushes forward against or between the front teeth. Over time, this pattern can contribute to an open bite, creating vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Our tongue trainers use a gentle, encouraging method to redirect the tongue, treating a reflex with a reflex.

We coordinate treatment with speech therapy or orofacial myology when appropriate, ensuring each patient receives the full support they need for the best possible outcome.

For the first 48 hours, cover the wires with the wax provided. Drying the wires thoroughly before applying wax helps it stay in place. Continue using wax for as long as it feels helpful.

Speech adapts quickly, usually within one to two days. Reading aloud at home and practicing any words that feel new with the adjusted tongue position speeds things along beautifully.

Softer foods and smaller bites work well for the first few days. Staying away from hard foods and sticky candy keeps the wires in great shape and reduces extra visits.

Thumb Guards

For children with a thumb sucking habit, our approach is gentle and entirely supportive. By creating a comfortable barrier to the roof of the mouth, the appliance removes the suction component of the habit, which is the primary reinforcing element, allowing the habit to resolve naturally and easily over time.

The appliance is built on a palatal expander base with thicker wires for durability, and additional cross wires for full palate coverage. When expansion of the upper arch is also beneficial, the same appliance accomplishes both goals at once, making treatment beautifully efficient.

Speech typically settles within one to two days. Reading aloud at home and practicing any new sounds helps the adjustment feel natural very quickly.

When expansion is part of the plan, use the key to turn the screw as directed, typically twice a week. A small flashlight makes the process easy for parents. A gentle feeling of pressure when the appliance is activated is a welcome sign that everything is working as it should.
