Common Orthodontic Emergencies

During orthodontic treatment, it is normal to experience occasional minor issues as your teeth begin to shift and adapt. Some of the most common situations include loose brackets, poking wires, or general soreness as your smile progresses.

Orthodontic discomfort often improves within a few days and is a natural part of the alignment process. Orthodontic wax can be placed over any area that feels irritating to create a smooth, comfortable surface.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If a bracket or band becomes loose, it can usually remain in place until your next visit. Keeping the area clean and avoiding hard or sticky foods helps maintain stability. If the bracket shifts significantly or causes discomfort, please contact our office so we can guide you.

Poking Wires

Occasionally, a wire may extend slightly and create irritation. Placing orthodontic wax over the end of the wire provides immediate relief. If needed, a clean pair of nail clippers can be used carefully to trim the wire at home, or our team can assist you with an adjustment.

General Soreness

It is common to feel some pressure or tenderness after adjustments or when starting a new phase of treatment. Soft foods and gentle chewing help ease this transition. Over the counter pain relief may also be helpful if needed.

Getting Comfortable During an Orthodontic Emergency

Keeping orthodontic wax on hand makes it easy to manage small areas of irritation. Applying wax to brackets or wires creates a smooth surface and helps your mouth adapt comfortably.

Rinsing with warm salt water can soothe tender areas and support healing. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene also keeps everything feeling fresh and healthy.

If something feels unusual or you would like additional guidance, our team is always available to support you and provide clear next steps.
