"I assumed palatal expansion was something only kids could do. Dr. Gorton walked me through the options and I was amazed. A year later my breathing has improved dramatically and I finally love my smile."
What is Palatal Expansion for Adults?
In childhood and early adolescence, the two bones of the upper jaw are still separate, making expansion straightforward. In adults, those bones have fused at the midline. For many years, that meant surgery was the only path to expansion. Today, a specialized appliance called MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) changes that equation entirely.
MARPE uses small temporary anchors placed in the palate to apply gentle, precise force directly to the bone, achieving real skeletal expansion without surgery. The results are stable, meaningful, and comparable to what was once only possible in younger patients.
For adults with mild crowding or arch width concerns, Invisalign expansion may also be an option. Dr. Gorton will evaluate your anatomy and goals during your consultation to determine the best approach.
Expansion typically takes 6 to 12 months in total, including both the active expansion phase and the stabilization period that follows.
Which Type of Expander is Right for You?
We offer two approaches to palatal expansion for adults: MARPE and Invisalign expansion. Dr. Gorton will recommend the right option based on your anatomy, age, lifestyle, and treatment goals.
MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion)
MARPE is the gold standard for adult palatal expansion. Four small miniscrews are placed in the palate under local anesthesia, anchoring an expander that applies gentle force directly to the bone rather than the teeth. This allows for true skeletal expansion in adults, something traditional expanders are unable to achieve once the palate has fused.
The appliance is turned once daily for approximately six weeks until the ideal width is reached, then left in place for around six months while bone stabilizes. The miniscrews are removed at the end of treatment, a quick and comfortable in-office procedure.
As with teen and child expansion, a small gap between the front teeth is expected and welcome , it confirms that real skeletal change is happening. This spacing is addressed with Invisalign after expansion, at free of charge.
Particularly effective for: Adults with airway concerns, sleep-disordered breathing, or significant crowding, and anyone seeking meaningful skeletal change without surgical intervention.
Invisalign Expansion
For adults with mild arch width concerns or moderate crowding, Invisalign clear aligners can achieve meaningful expansion with outstanding results. Aligners are nearly invisible, removable, smooth edged, and restriction-free on eating or activities.
Aligners are worn for around 23 hours per day and changed weekly as the arch gradually widens. Because the aligners are designed in advance using digital imaging, in-office visits are reduced, and progress can be monitored remotely through an app.
Invisalign can also be used alongside MARPE or other appliances, making it a flexible complement within a broader treatment plan.
A good fit for adults who: Have mild to moderate arch concerns, prefer a discreet and flexible approach, and are looking for a comfortable experience with minimal lifestyle disruption.
Why Adults Seek Expansion
Adults come to us for expansion for a wide range of reasons. Some have lived with crowding for years and are finally ready to address it. Others have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or airway issues and are looking for a structural solution. Many simply want a healthier, more confident smile and are surprised to learn what is now achievable without surgery.
Whatever brings you in, we take time to understand your goals and design a treatment plan built around your life.
